Top-Down Practical Voice Science for Singers and Teachers I

Wednesdays 10am-12pm PST / August 11th-September 8th

What needs to happen before we start singing? How does the whole prime itself to engage with the parts? In this novel top-down approach to vocal pedagogy, we will explore the elements leading up to the classic mechanics of singing first, before getting to the bits and pieces. In this course we will explore:

  • Key body-mapping concepts for proper somatosensory processing.

  • An introduction to ways the brain coordinates vocalization: vocal learning and evolution.

  • Listening and psychoacoustics: what you need to hear before you can create sounds.

  • Learning, motor learning, and practice

PICK YOUR LEARNING STYLE

Option 1: Collaborative Classroom Experience:

Studies have shown that we learn better the more we attend and engage with the material. Throughout history, from the Talmud scholar to the first year medical student, the idea of learning through asking questions, doing, and even teaching newly learned material has enhanced scholarship over the centuries. All courses are designed to embrace these critical elements of the learning experience to focus attention, enrich the senses, and engage the mind in a fun, positive, and informative format. Students who select this option will be invited to:

  • Answer questions and explain concepts

  • Teach a fellow student in an activity or idea

  • Engage in group demonstrations and activities

Option 2: Classroom Experience:

Not all learners wish to publicly engage with fellow students, but prefer to be observers of a subject and engage in their own way. This option allows you to be present for all of the content live, but opt out of activities and be a spectator instead! Or if you do feel like participating sometimes, you can do that too (just let me know)!
